One of Utah’s most common spiders would have to be the jumping spider. Many people become acquainted with jumping spiders inside of their homes during the colder months when spiders come inside to seek shelter. The jumping spider is actually one of the more attractive spiders you might see in the house. The more you know about jumping spiders the easier it will be to make sure they stay outside of your home and that you do not have any too close for comfort encounters. The jumping spider also usually has bright colored eyes that draw many people in. In fact, the jumping spider has 8 eyes scattered across their face. Their eyes help them see in all directions as they use them to hunt for insect prey. HuntingUnlike most spiders, jumping spiders don’t actually use webs to catch their prey. Most spiders spin webs in hopes that other critters will become stuck in them and then they prey on them. A jumping spider does not need to create webs because instead they jump to capture their prey. It is important to note that they can spin silk and they will spin webs on occasion. However, they use the webs they create to protect themselves from weather and not to catch food.
